-
- what do you mean by "cannot initialize the dial tone" ??
-
- you get the dial tone from central office in response to going off hook.
- most modems set to default state will only dial when this signal energy is
- detected on line, otherwise they report 'NO DIALTONE' and refuse to
- proceed further. Is that what you are getting? If so, check why the modem
- can't detect it.
-
- Buy a phone Y-jack, a $0.50 connector having RJ-11 on one end and two
- RJ-11 on the other end, basically a splitter. Make sure you buy one with 4
- or 6 pins in assembly, not 8. Plug it into wall and use its 2 outside
- female ports for connecting the modem and for connecting a parallel phone.
-
- use any comm terminal program and take the modem off-hook:
- type AT&F H1 <cr>
- before you do that, take the parallel phone off-hook and listen if you
- hear a click which is indicative of a modem seizing the line. Furthermore,
- then issue ATL3 <cr> to boost the speaker volume, you should hear the
- dialtone from modem's speaker as well.
-
- at this state, issue ATDT<number>, you should hear the modem dialing. if
- it does not dial but goes back on hook after a while with 'NO DIALTONE'
- message, the modem is legitimately bad.
-
- try ATX1DT<number> <cr>
- this should definitely make the modem dial regardless of dialtone
- presence. in your parallel phone, you should hear it quite well. If you
- hear nothing on line although the sound comes from modem's speaker, you
- got some hardware problems on your modem.
-
- I could advise more but your initial info is too brief. try it...
